So I treated myself to a new pair of running shoes. These are Vibram
Five Finger shoes and the concept is to protect your feet while
running bare foot. I did a couple of miles in them this week and
while I don't picture doing a marathon in them, they are comfortable
to run in.

Those are really intriguing. What prompted you to buy them? Do you feel everything under your feet? How's the shock absorbancy?
I've been looking at them for over a year and I've always been a fan of being barefoot. In college I wore driving mocs as shoes even in the winter.
You do pretty much feel everything under foot and there is no shock absorbance. Your stride actually changes a bit away heel striking.
